On Repeat: The Weeknd - House of Balloons

If you haven't heard about this dude from Toronto, then let me put you on.  He goes by the name "The Weeknd" and he has hit the scene with a John Candy size cannonball splash.  I don't even know what genre to put the kid in, but who cares, it's like the music is fornicating with your ear.  His debut mixtape is called "House of Balloons." It is so well put together that I automatically thought he had to be producing the work himself.  I'm still not entirely sure if he doesn't have a hand in production or not, but he does work with other producers.  The sound they're producing is like a beautiful collision of known and unknown melodies. I've had the mixtape on repeat for the last week+.  Someone I know, described his sound as The Dream x Portishead.  That description is accurate enough for me.  His subject matter is edgy, especially to consider he's only 20, but yet he makes it sound like it's all alright.  But if you've ever been in any situation that he describes, then he'll vividly take you back to that stage of your life.  The buzz around The Weeknd is unparalleled to any other artist to my knowledge.  I say that because this is his first released body of work, period! But the music has managed to capture many ears within 4-6 months.  The mixtape released March 21, 2011, but he leaked 3 of the songs on Youtube in late 2010.  According to his Facebook page, he'll be releasing 2 more projects by the end of the year.  I look forward to them and hope he keeps the sound that I and others crave to hear.

My favorite joint at the moment:
